Screen & Coat

Screen & Coat Services for Gymnasium Floors in Colorado

Maintaining your gym flooring is essential for both performance and safety. Over time, everyday activities—from sports practice to equipment use—create surface-level damage that can dull your floor’s appearance and reduce its protective layer. Fortunately, the screen and coat process offers an efficient and cost-effective solution to preserve the life and integrity of your sports floors.

At J&M Hardwood Floors, we provide professional gym floor refinishing and screen & coat services throughout Colorado. Our experienced team works with schools, recreation centers, and athletic facilities to refresh the finish, enhance durability, and protect the investment you’ve made in your wood flooring.

What Is Screen & Coat?

Screen and coat (also called screening) is a gym floor maintenance method that involves lightly abrading the top coat of finish and reapplying a new protective layer. This method does not involve sanding the hardwood beneath, making it ideal for floors in good structural condition but needing surface restoration.

This service is especially valuable for high-traffic areas like basketball courts, volleyball courts, and multi-use gymnasium floors that face constant friction, scuffs, and wear and tear.

Step-by-Step Screen & Coat Process

We follow a detailed multi-step system that ensures professional-grade results and long-term performance.

Step 1

Initial Cleaning & Debris Removal

We start by using a dust mop to clear loose dirt, oil, and surface particles. Any stuck-on items like gum or dried spills are removed manually using scrapers and specialty tools.

Step 2

Deep Scrub

Next, we use a walk-behind scrubber with an MFMA-approved detergent to thoroughly cleanse the floor. Cleaners like Basic Coatings’ IFT are used to remove built-up wax, bleach residue, paint, and general grime from regular use. This removes contaminants such as hand sanitizer, soap, and disinfectant that may degrade finish over time.

Step 3

Screening the Floor

We lightly abrade the existing finish using 180-grit sandpaper attached to a professional buffing system. This eliminates surface sheen and promotes proper bonding with the new finish. The process is gentle on the hardwood, preserving the structure of the original wood flooring.

Step 4

Dust Extraction & Final Tack

We perform a thorough inspection of the surface and then vacuum all remaining dust. A towel or microfiber pad is used for tacking, ensuring the surface is spotless before application of the new finish.

Step 5

Perimeter Detailing

Areas around bleachers, corners, and baseboards are cleaned manually to prevent contamination from airborne dust.

Step 6

Finish Application

We apply two coats of water-based finish, which is ideal for Colorado’s climate and meets environmental safety standards. These finishes dry quickly (usually within 24–48 hours) and offer strong protection against moisture, humidity, and general gym usage.

Why Screen & Coat Instead of Sanding?

If your gymnasium floor doesn’t have deep scratches or finish failure, screen and coat is the better option. It refreshes the topcoat without removing any of the underlying wood. This extends the lifespan of your floor and postpones the need for more invasive refinishing.

Benefits of Screen & Coat:

This method is effective across various flooring zones, including tennis courts, community gymnasiums, and indoor sports facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How often should I schedule a screen and coat for my gym floor?
Most facilities benefit from this service every 12 to 18 months, depending on usage, cleaning routines, and floor condition.
No. The screening process only targets the top layer of finish. Your basketball, volleyball, or tennis game lines and logos remain fully intact.
No. Harsh cleaners like bleach or acidic products can break down the new finish. Use MFMA-approved cleaners designed for gym flooring to avoid damaging the surface.
Use proper cleaning equipment, avoid dragging furniture, and keep entrance areas clean to reduce debris. Regular maintenance, including dust mopping and proper disinfectant use, goes a long way.
