Step-by-Step Screen & Coat Process

We follow a detailed multi-step system that ensures professional-grade results and long-term performance.

Step 1

Initial Cleaning & Debris Removal

We start by using a dust mop to clear away loose dirt and surface particles. Any stuck-on items like gum or tape are removed at this time using a scraper.

Step 2

Deep Scrub

Next, we use a swing buffer with a solution tank to thoroughly cleanse the floor. We use basic Coatings’ IFT to remove built-up dirt, wax, oily residue, shoe marks, soda, food spills and anything foreign that may be on the floor surface. We then follow up with a secondary mild detergent a second time to remove any left over residue.

Step 3

Abrading the Floor

We gently abrade the floor to remove only the top layer of finish, using a Square Scrub 20″ machine an spp pad, and 180 or 150-grit sandpaper attached. This eliminates surface sheen and provide mechanical adhesion for proper bonding with the new finish. The process is aggressive but gentle and preserves the original artwork.

Step 4

Dust Extraction & Final Tack

We perform a thorough inspection of the surface and then vacuum all remaining dust. A towel or microfiber pad is used for tacking, ensuring the surface is spotless before application of the new finish.

Step 5

Perimeter Detailing

Areas around bleachers, corners, baseboards and side edges are cleaned manually to ensure a thorough clean

Step 6

Finish Application

We apply two coats of low VOC water-based finish, which meets Colorado’s environmental safety standards. These finishes dry quickly (usually within 2-3 hours) and offer strong protection and safety for all player on the athletic surface.

Why Screen & Coat Instead of Sanding?

If your gymnasium floor doesn’t have deep scratches or finish failure, screen and coat is the better option. It refreshes the topcoat without removing any of the underlying wood. This extends the lifespan of your floor and postpones the need for more invasive refinishing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What Is Resurfacing

Resurfacing is a gym floor maintenance method that involves lightly abrading the top coat of finish and reapplying a new protective layer. This method does not involve sanding the hardwood beneath, making it ideal for floors in good structural condition but needing surface restoration.

This service is especially valuable for high-traffic areas like basketball courts, volleyball courts, and multi-use gymnasium floors that face constant friction, scuffs, and wear and tear.

For best performance J&M Hardwood Floors recommends having your gym floor maintained annually or semi-annually depending on the amount of wear your sport floor sees during a years period.

No. The screening process only targets the top layer of finish. Your basketball, volleyball, or tennis game lines and logos remain fully intact.
No. Harsh cleaners like bleach or acidic products can break down the new finish. Use MFMA-approved cleaners designed for gym flooring to avoid damaging the surface.
Use proper cleaning equipment, avoid dragging furniture, and keep entrance areas clean to reduce debris. Regular maintenance, including dust mopping and proper disinfectant use, goes a long way.
Don’t let daily use diminish the quality and safety of your gym floor. Whether you’re maintaining a school gym, recreation center, or competitive sports flooring system, J&M Hardwood Floors delivers expert care to keep your floors looking and performing like new.
